Andrea Brigaglia's research and teaching are focused in the area of Islamic Studies, with a special emphasis on West Africa and on the role of Muslim scholars in Africa's intellectual history. He has done research on the formation of scholarly networks of the Tijaniyya Sufi order in Nigeria, Ghana and Tunisia; on Qur'anic exegesis in Northern Nigeria; on twentieth century Islamic religious literature by Nigerian authors in Arabic and in African languages, especially Hausa. Dr. Brigaglia is currently completing a manuscript on Qur'anic exegesis in Northern Nigeria in the twentieth century, and is collaborating with ISITA (Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa), Northwestern University, in the preparation of a bibliography of writings by Tijani scholars.
